Las jacarandas son nativas de regiones secas de Sudamérica, de crecimiento rápido en sus primeros años de desarrollo, miden de 10 a 15 metros de altura, dependiendo de la especie y viven entre 40 y 50 años.
¿Cuál es su origen?
Su origen en México tiene dos historias, la primera dice que José Landero y Coss, visitó Perú en donde trabajaba en el diseño de jardines el arquitecto Tatsugoro Matsumoto, y lo invitó a México para realizar el diseño de un jardín japonés en su hacienda en Hidalgo. Intentó plantar cerezos en México, pero no florecieron así que sembró jacarandas. Rápidamente se esparció el rumor sobre su trabajo y Matsumoto diseñó diversos jardines en época del Porfiriato.
La segunda, afirma el escritor Aurelio Asiain, que existían registros sobre la presencia de la jacaranda en México anteriores a la llegada de Matusmoto. En 1846, en el libro The British Florist de Henry G. Bohn, se publicó una referencia al traslado de semillas de México a Inglaterra por parte de Thomas Hardy, un militar británico que viajó a nuestro país en 1819.
¿Y sus cuidados?
Las jacarandas necesitan poco espacio y cuidados normales. Florecen en primavera y verano y de las jacarandas mimosifolia, las de flores de color azul violáceo son las más comunes, aun cuando las de flores blancas llegan a ser conocidas también. Sus raíces no son agresivas, y a pesar de llegar a ser árboles muy altos filtran la luz. Requieren poca agua y no necesitan fertilizantes. Además, su madera es de alta calidad y se utiliza en la fabricación de muebles. Son muy resistente a las plagas y a la contaminación y científicos afirman que 10 árboles de jacaranda pueden absorber el CO2 emitido por mil 400 autos al día.
¿Cuáles son sus usos?
Sus hojas secas son usadas en la fabricación de tientes y ungüentos que sirve para sanar heridas. La infusión de la corteza es muy buena para lavar úlceras. Y juntas, hojas y corteza, ayudan en el tratamiento de la sífilis y la gonorrea.
Las jacarandas tienen vainas de semillas redondas, aplanadas y duras que contienen varias semillas. Durante los primeros dos años de crecimiento, requieren diversos cuidados ya que son bastante susceptibles al frío y a las heladas. Después de este período, sus cuidados son mínimos. Tienen un crecimiento lento pero continuo, las ramas de las jacarandas se doblan en ángulos marcados.
El promedio de vida de un árbol de jacaranda es de 50 años. Alcanzan la madurez en unos 20 años y son capaces de volver a crecer si se dañan.
El adjetivo jacarandoso, que identifica a alguien alegre o desenvuelto, se puede rastrear la palabra hasta sus raíces árabes y persas, donde la voz “jaque” hace alusión a la figura del rey y se relaciona con el movimiento que acerca a los jugadores de ajedrez a la victoria. El árbol de la jacaranda obtiene su nombre del guaraní hakuã (perfume) renda (lugar) y se puede traducir como “lugar perfumado”. Sin embargo, las jacarandas son polinizadas por abejas atraídas por el color morado y no por el olor.
